Hello Everyone!!

Well WOW, what a great meeting last month! It took JB a couple of days to recover from the yelling, but it was fun anyway! Thanks to Jeff and Rose for all the great pictures. Don't know if we can beat the excitement of a Halloween costume contest this time around, but we can give it a try!!

Remember that in November and December we have move the meeting date to the 3rd Saturday, instead of the 4th, because of the holidays. So that means November 21st and December 18th.

For November we will be returning to the centrally located Poway Dog Park. By the way, I don't know if all of you are aware of it, but it is a lot closer to the dog area to park in the side parking lot, rather than the main parking lot. The side parking lot is at the end of Bowron Road, which is the same road that the library is on. It is one block East of the road where the main entrance is. Basically, just go East from the main Poway Community park entrance, and turn right on Bowron. You can see a map at http://www.yelp.com/map/poway-dog-park-poway.

Join us for our November meeting to get all revved up and hungry for you upcoming Thanksgiving!

Hello San Diego Corgi Lovers!!

A number of members have requested a Meetup at Maddox Dog Park (7825 Flanders Drive in Mira Mesa). We don't think we have been there before, so tentatively I am scheduling it there, but I am soliciting comments about this selection. And I will pay a visit over there within the next week to check it out.

We think most people would love to have a costume contest, as we have had in years before. Carol will not be there (out of town on business), but JB will be there, and would be happy to MC the festivities - well let's just say he will try to speak up louder than the dogs!

You do NOT have to dress up to attend. Just show up to enjoy the costumes, and you might win anyway!

For the contest this time, there will be a few prizes:

* Most Creative Costume - generally to a "home made" costume
* Costume that best says "Corgi Halloween"
* Overall Best Costume

You will get to vote on little ballots from 10:00 to 11:00, then we will tally the votes and call a winner and bestow incredibily valuable prizes at 11:15.

Hope to see you all there in your Halloween Best !! Oh and that goes for the people too, if you want!

Carol and JB

PS. Please mark your calendars now for the THIRD Saturdays in November and December. Our meetups will be on Nov 21 and Dec 19 - to avoid holidays at the end of those months!

Our September Meetup is coming up next week. Sorry for the late notice, but it's been a bit hectic of late.
A couple of notes:

1. We've had a number of folks looking for corgis to adopt and also some corgis available for adoption over the past couple months. I sometimes send out an email, but really the best way is for you (and people you know) to post pictures and comments on our Message Board. Then people can get used to going there as a resource.

2. Would you like to be involved as an Organizer for this group? JB and I have done it for several years now and we're thinking it might be nice for someone else to join in the fun. It doesn't take much time- and the Meetup site does all the organization work for you. If you are interested in helping out as Ass't Organizers or taking over completely or anything in between, give me a holler (via email) and let's talk. JB and I are going to be traveling more over the next few years and we likely won't be around as much. So, I think it would benefit the group to have other folks involved in the admin side.

3. JB and I are on vacation in Wyoming right now. We won't be attending the meeting on next Saturday. But we'll see you in October. We will (of course) have a Halloween Costume Contest for our October meeting. Jake, Louie and Rosie send their regards.

4. Mark your calendar. Our November and December meetings will both be on the THIRD Saturday - not the Fourth - to steer clear of the holidays at the end of those months. The November meetup will be on 11/21. The December meetup will be on 12/19.

Have a wonderful day.

It's time to hit the beach this month! Our August meeting will be at Coronado Dog Beach. Come on out and have a great time scampering in the waves. Remember that the little grassy area right across from the beach is OFF-LIMITS and people walking dogs on that grass may be ticketed. So - go around it!

It's easy to find us - just look for all the corgi-type people. Remember that the ocean is salt water. So you may want to bring fresh water and a bowl for your pup. Other good ideas include sunscreen and beach chairs. Word to the wise: Beach bags, purses and other items left sitting on the sand often get peed upon.

Hope to see you all there.

Happy August,
Carol and JB

Important Revision on Friday, July 24! This meetup is being changed to Rancho Bernardo Dog Park. Alert Corgi Members Steve and Jonesy let us know that there is a big event at Coronado Beach this weekend - so there will be zero parking and it will be a zoo. We looked at survey results (would you like to go to another dog beach?) from those of you who rsvp'd. While it looks like everyone prefers Coronado Beach, there is interest in trying Ocean Beach and Del Mar, but several suggestions to wait until AFTER tourist season - so maybe we'll work on those in the fall. Bottom line: We're changing the location for the July Meetup to Rancho Bernardo. If you know Corgi Meetup people who don't check their email, please call them so that we get the word out about the change. Thanks.

Last month doing the sheepherding was terrific. I think everyone who came had a wonderful time. And Jennifer and her crew could not have been nicer! Even those of us with corgis who were not at all interested in sheep (I mean NOT AT ALL!), had a great day. The weather was perfect. Everyone showed up in a scattered fashion as requested and it went so smoothly. We are a great group with wonderful members!

A note about good manners and doggy decorum: Apparently there was some sort of altercation at the corgi gathering last month in Balboa Park. I got word that someone got bitten and some clothes got torn. This is not acceptable. If you are the owner/human companion of the agressor in this fracas, it might be a good idea to consider skipping these events in the future. We want everyone to have a good time in a SAFE, happy atmosphere - where both dogs and people can feel secure about allowing animals to be off-leash. It doesn't work if we have dogs who are overly cranky.

Hope to see a big beach crowd in a couple weeks. Remember - bring fresh water and drinking bowls. Also there is no shade. You might also want to bring a lawn chair. Anything left sitting in the sand is likely to get peed upon.

Happy July

There is a lot of information below about this event. We want to make sure everyone understands what to expect. Please read everything, and please RSVP if you are going to attend and how many of your dogs will participate. We expect to laugh and yell a lot and go home hoarse!

If you are not going to Sheep Herding, the regular meeting is at Nate's Point Dog Park at 10:00. Located on the West Mesa of Balboa Park, immediately south of El Prado / Laurel Street and east of Balboa Drive - here is the link -- http://www.npdog.org/park.html.

Who and Why -- The sheep herding day will be an event where your dog can visit REAL sheep in a fun atmosphere and see what happens!

Where -- At the home of Jennifer and Ron Ewers noted above. It is 1 hour and 10 minutes south of Mission Valley.

What -- There will be a professional handler (Jennifer - http://www.caninesnewe.com ) who will take your dog (without you) into a corral and be with sheep to see if your dog can herd. Some dogs take to it really naturally and herd the sheep, and some have no idea what is going on and go to sleep or run away. Who knows?

When -- The event starts at 9:00 am and is first-come first-served, which means that you will probably have to wait. Each dog takes about 5-10 minutes to go in the corral, do his/her thing, and get out. One dog at a time. Carol and JB will be there at 8:30 am or so to set up. If you want to go early, you should come starting at about 8:30 am. Please plan to wait, and please be patient.

You can come at any time you would like, but we would like to spread things out. So if your last name starts with A-N, come at 9:00 or so, and if your last name starts with O-Z, come at noon. Again, you can come whenever you want. Remember, we are trying to be flexible, and we do not know how many people will come and when, so please wait for your turn and be patient! Bring some snacks or lunch and drinks for you and your dogs. There will be water available at the site for the dogs, but you should plan to be self-sufficient.

More what -- It will probably be hot. If you have a pop-up tent like an EZUP you may want to bring it, and a beach towel or blanket and a chair so you can be comfortable. The dogs will have to be on a leash at all times that they are near the corral. The owner has other dogs in a kennel - don't bother them. This is not an open park where the dogs can roam freely. Carol and JB will be bringing an XPEN for our own dogs. You may want to bring one with a shade, or maybe a crate.

Jennifer said that at a similar event she had 27 shelties, and everyone went once, a few went a second time at the end. You will probably go only once. This is the only day we could get, and we could not get another day until the fall.

Some dogs have a great time with the sheep and herd them and some dogs do nothing. Our border collie Jake barked and ran around and did not really do much. Phoebe had the sheep herded in a little group in about a minute and stared them down. In general, an active interested dog will last for a few minutes and then be very tired. Some will last for 5-10 minutes. Some love it and get the idea and some don’t get it in the slightest.

How much -- The cost is $35 per dog. You must understand that it is possible that your dog may be completely uninterested in the sheep and some of you will wonder why you came. The dog may be afraid, or may bark continuously. In any case, no refunds. The point is to allow your dog to be around sheep, and see if your dog is interested in herding. You will pay your $35 before starting, by check or cash. No credit cards and no credit. There will be no refunds once your dog goes inside the corral. You will have to sign a release/waiver that releases Jennifer from all liability for any problems or injury to your dog.

This is a private home with corrals, horses, sheep and dogs. This it is not a public business where you will have all the amenities you might expect at a fairgrounds. The toilet is upstairs in the house. This is not a handicapped-friendly area. If you want to use the bathroom, you will have to go up stairs. If you are in a wheelchair, it will not work for you. The area is dry and the ground is fairly hard, and the dogs tend to run fast. So your dog may be uncomfortable and may tear foot pads if they get very excited. If you have dog booties, you may consider putting them on your dog. If it does not work out for you, please keep a smiling face and go home happy. Above all, be patient.

There are fields nearby and if you walk your dog, you must be careful about foxtails. Foxtails are little weeds like grass that are about 1 inch long that can go in your dogs ears or up the nose. They do not come back out easily, and if a vet is needed it can cost $100s to get the things out. Please be careful.

We are really looking forward to having a good time with you at this event! See you there!

Our MAY meeting will be at Rancho Bernardo. Everyone is welcome. Come on out and we'll have a great time. You are welcome to attend whether you have a corgi or not.

What follows is information for NEXT MONTH - not this month. Many members have been asking for information and I wanted to let you know some fun facts. So here you go.

SHEEPHERDING NEXT MONTH - JUNE 27TH! I need to give them a count of how many dogs will be participating. When you RSVP for the May group, you'll be asked a couple questions about our sheepherding event in June. Here are the details - at least what I know right now. If you have other questions, let me know.

WHAT: The opportunity to have your corgi try out sheepherding. This will be with a small group of sheep in a pen. Your dog doesn't have to know anything about sheep. You don't have to know anything about sheep. Your dog will be in a pen with a trainer - you won't have to do anything except watch!

DATE: Saturday, June 27, 2009

TIME: We will start at 9:30am. It looks like about a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Mission Valley to Campo - so leave yourself plenty of time to get there. We'll start in the morning and keep going until we're done.

WHERE: Canines and Ewe, 2402 Lake Morena Dr., Campo, CA 91906 (DIRECTIONS AS FOLLOWS)

DIRECTIONS:
Take 8 East. Exit BUCKMAN SPRINGS RD. GO RIGHT. Travel 5 miles GO RIGHT on OAK Dr. Come down into the village at the store/gas station. Turn Left at MOLCHAN RD. At the next Stop go LEFT and IMMEDIATELY RIGHT into driveway. There is a sign with a border collie on it with the address 2402. Use these directions as I am not sure what the website directions are.

WEBSITE: http://caninesnewe.com/
WHO CAN COME: Everyone can come. Only one dog will be working at once, so there will be lots of time to visit with other dogs, watch, etc. Even if your dog won’t be doing any herding, you are still welcome to come on out to watch and cheer on our aspiring herders. Lots of the sheltie folks brought their x-pens, etc.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING: Lawn chairs, shade, water bowl, Lunch? **NOTE: Also there are no handicap facilities. The bathroom has stairs that go up, so unfortunately we cannot accommodate a wheelchair person.

I'm sorry to be late with this announcement, but here it is at last! I checked the past many meetups and it looks like it's time to head down south to Chula Vista. We'll meet at Montevalle Park Dog Park - it's a nice place. Come on out and join in the fun! Everyone is welcome. Bring dogs, your friends and relatives - and we'll have a great time. I see that we have a number of new members too!

A reminder that our sheepherding event will be in June NOT in April. Stay tuned for more details about that.

Hope to see you all next week.

Well, it's not quite summer, but we're going to hit the beach this month anyway. For some reason, a lot of you have been requesting a beach romp recently, so let's do it! Our March meeting will be at Coronado Dog Beach. JB and I will be on vacation, so we'll miss this one, but we'll be there in spirit. Come on out and have a great time scampering in the waves.

For the future: A reminder that our April meetup will be down at Canines N Ewe for corgi sheepherding! This is now the moment when I'm going to ask you to tell me if you want your dog or dogs to participate. When you rsvp for the March meeting, you'll be asked if you plan to have your dog participate in the April sheepherding. We need to do this so that the folks who run the show can plan on having the correct number of sheep ready for our event. This is not a drop-dead commitment (in other words, you won't be committed financially if you can't make it), but we do want to get a fairly accurate idea. The cost per dog for 'playing with the sheep' is $35. I will give you more information about all this in early April.

Note that I will schedule an alternative location for April - for any of you who don't want to do the herding and would prefer to get together somewhere in town. Location to be announced in early April.

Have a great month and a great time at the beach.
