Our gathering of San Diego Corgi Meetup for February will be at Nate's Point in Balboa Park. We hope to see everyone there. If it's raining, some folks will probably still show up, so feel free to come on out regardless of weather. We hope to see all our short-legged friends there - and their two-legged people too!

A peek into the future.....
Herding Sheep: Last meetup, we took an informal survey about having a corgi sheepherding experience and most folks seemed very interested. Our members Maxine and James are also Sheltie Meetup members and raved about trying herding with that group. I've talked to the gal out at Canines N' Ewe Sheepherding Ranch (visit http://caninesnewe.com/ for more info) and have it set up for our group to head down there in April. We can't go in February because they will be in the middle of lambing season - how fun is that? Here's what I know so far:

Date - April 25
Time - Don't know yet (probably start in the morning and go until we're done)
Where - Campo - about a 1 hr 10 min drive from Mission Valley
Cost - $35 per dog
Reservations? Yes, I'll need to get a count for how many are coming because she has to know how many sheep to have available. You don't have to tell me 'yes' or 'no' now. I'll poll members to get a count when I send out the info next month for our March Meetup.
What if you don't want to go? No problem. I'll arrange an alternative Meetup location for April for anyone who wants another choice. But, note that you could always come down to Campo and let your dog run around. You don't have to do the sheepherding part. I'll find out more about this and let you know.

Hope to see you all at the February gathering! Happy Valentine's Day!!

Carol and JB

It's time for our first meetup in 2009! Everyone is welcome - corgi owners, dogs, friends, assorted groupies - come on out and celebrate the joy of romping with short-legged pups.

This month we'll go back to Rancho Bernardo. Please note that there is a parking lot on the north, but there is another lot right next to the dog area. You might want to check out a map of the park ahead of time - so you can park in just the right spot for you and your pooch!

Last month we collected $270 in contributions for the Meetup charges. And that was terrific! To put this in perspective, consider that the website costs $72 per quarter which we (JB and Carol) have been covering for the last 2 years. We figure if all Corgi Meetup members would each contribute a big $5 per year, we'd have enough for the website, name tags, and odds & ends. To those of you who handed us some money last month, thanks very much. For anyone who didn't contribute and now feels the urge to chip in, that would be great too! If your budget is really tight, don't sweat it.

We hope to see you all on Saturday!

It's holiday time again and we're ready for an especially festive meetup - this time on the THIRD Saturday of the month to beat the Christmas weekend - at Poway Community Park. I apologize for the delay in getting this out, but we had some logistics issues with the website - all straightened out now. Special events for this meetup are detailed below:

1. We'll have a drawing for prizes (left over from our Halloween gala) which means everyone who shows up will get a raffle ticket. We'll do the drawing at 11am so plan your arrival accordingly. I think we have plenty to give away, but if you have something you really need to donate, bring it along.

2. In the "Help someone less fortunate" department: We'd like to collect donations (completely voluntary, of course) to support the organization "Baghdad Pups" which raises money to help bring dogs adopted by service folks in the Middle East back to the US. Our alert member Terry Blain called our attention to this worthwhile organization. You can learn more at http://www.baghdadpups.com/. We thought it would be great to collect the money and then send all our checks together - from San Diego Corgi Meetup! If you'd like to contribute, please make your check payable to SPCA International and bring it along to the meeting. Terry will collect them and send them along with a nice card from the group.

3. And in a related contribution department: JB and I have been fronting the cost of the Meetup website and other odds & ends for a while now. If you'd like to make a small contribution (cash preferably) to help offset those costs, that would be fun. I figure our costs for one year at about $300. And we have 50-70 people who participate every month (not to mention, a bunch of other members too) - so if everyone contributed about $5, that would cover everything. Seems like a pretty good deal for $5 a year! This is optional, of course, but would be appreciated.

We hope to see you all there on Saturday, Dec 20th! Ho Ho Ho!!

It's almost Thanksgiving and time to roast that (No, No - not that little short dog!) turkey. We'll try a new park several members have been recommending - Kearney Mesa Dog Park. Come on out and join us. Tell your friends. Tell other dogs you meet! Everyone is welcome.

Mark your calendars: Our December meetup will be on Sat, Dec 20 (the THIRD Saturday - not the FOURTH) in deference for the holiday festivities.

It's that spooky time again! Time for Halloween and that means it's time for a Corgi Halloween Costume Contest once again. Remember last year? It was just after the fires and our first place winner came attired as a firetruck! We still enjoy showing those pictures to our friends.

This year we'll be meeting at Wells Park. The Dog Park is a 1.4 acre spread within El Cajon's Wells Park. It is the East County's second leashless dog park and is a grassy haven for pooches. And it's been getting rave reviews from East County residents who sometimes traveled far away just to let their dogs run wild. It has gravel and grassy sun areas and dual drinking fountains (for pets and their owners). Located in the southwest part of Wells Park at 1153 E. Madison Ave., the off-leash area is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is lighted for night use.

We'll plan to hold the costume contest at 11am, so plan to be there by then if you want to strut your stuff. We think it would be fun to give out prizes like we have before, so if you can bring something to donate (it doesn't have to be big! it's just fun to win something!), please do. We'll have winners in the following categories: Best Costume and Most Creative. Then we'll have a general drawing for the rest of the prizes.

If this contest and watching a bunch of short dogs run around with abandon sounds like something fun, please join us on Saturday. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends too. Hope to see you there.

On a doggy day care note: If you are in the downtown area, you might want to check this out. I received this notice from "Dogs and the City." We are an indoor facility and would love to enroll any of your members for daycare! We have supervised activities and take them for walks, too! Please visit or contact: Dogs and the City, Daycare & Spa 555 W. C street #101 San Diego, CA 92101 - 619-234-9663 - dogsandthecity.com

See you soon.

It's time to think about scampering corgis again! We had a great time at the beach in August, didn't we? This month we'll meet at Nate's Point near Balboa Park. Please read on for more info about meetup locations and a note about "dog & people behavior."

The Nate's Point Dog Off-Leash Area is located on the West Mesa of Balboa Park, immediately south of El Prado / Laurel Street and east of Balboa Drive. The off-leash area is approximately 2.3 acres in size, and has been used as a dog park since 1996. This off-leash park is one of the most popular dog parks in the San Diego region, and is used every day of the year.
Results of the survey that asked "which are your favorite meeting spots for Corgi Meetup?" Coronardo Beach was the favorite by far. The other big vote getters were Harry Griffin, Poway, Wells, and Doyle parks. Although most of the ones we've visited got a vote or two.
Be thinking about Halloween! We'll have a costume contest again this year - and we'll do it at Wells Park this time. More info next month. We'll also be giving away prizes, so if you have something you'd be willing to donate, save it for the Halloween meetup.

A note about proper meetup decorum:. We've had one or two incidents in the past few months where a couple dogs were a bit beyond enthusiastic. As your organizers, we offer the following comments.

It is the responsibility of each participant at the meetup to monitor the behavior of their dogs. And when necessary to take appropriate action to ensure harmony and the safety of all.
If your dog is acting nasty, please leash him and, if necessary, leave. We all get out of bed on the wrong side occasionally - we all understand that - and we'll welcome you back next month. But let's not make others pay for your canine's grumpy mood.
In general, dogs should be leashed immediately at the first sign of aggression towards people or other dogs and removed if necessary. But if the owner involved isn't making this happen, YOU need to say, "Matilda or Joe or Clementine or Fred, please put your dog on a leash now!" Don't wait for someone else to do it or for the situation to escalate. It is everyone's responsibility to speak up if a dog is acting agressively toward other dogs.

JB and Carol will be on vacation the end of this month so we'll miss the September fun, but we'll definitely be around for Halloween next month. Have a wonderful gathering - and happy scampering!

We're going to try for a beach outing once again. We all love Coronado Dog Beach and that's where we'll be heading. You'll need to bring drinking water for your pups! Also note that this is a beach - there is no shade, nothing to sit on unless you bring it yourself.

Member Tina says, "If you can't find parking along Ocean Blvd, then turn down the side streets near Sunset Park and find a shady spot down there. Also remember you can't walk your dog through the park (the big grassy area) or you will get ticketed. I have seen Animal control parked there on the weekends. See you there!"

We hope to see everyone there. Bring your friends and their dogs too. We'll have a great time.

Also P.S. - I got the message that this group has outgrown Doyle Park. I agree that it was just too crowded last time. What a group we are! It's a nice little park, but too small for us going forward. Thanks to those of you who commented to me about this.

Meeting Location CHANGE: Alert members Steve and Jonesy sent me this:

Hi Carol,
I was at Coronado dog beach this morning and I noticed signs that there is no parking on that whole last block by the dog beach and naval station entrance on Jul 26/27 due to an "Optimist Meeting." I didn't know if this would create a problem for everyone trying to park. I guess we can also be optimistic and hope we find a prking spot or maybe you want to postpone the meet a week....Steve and Jonesy

Boy, it sure it great to have members who think ahead. Thank you, guys!

So - I think to avoid problems, the best thing to do is to move. That's why we're going to move our July Meetup to DOYLE COMMUNITY PARK. We've been there before and you've rated it highly. I just talked to a recreation person there and told her we'll be coming.

Hope to see everyone there.

It's time to get together again for fun and frolics with our short legged friends. We almost picked going back to Coronado Beach because it's been so warm, but decided to save that for the July meeting. Instead this month we'll meet up at Harry Griffin Dog Park, recently requested by several members.

Everyone is welcome. Come on out with friends and pups and we'll see you there.
