Emily is still pushing for a Corgi puppy and I have a question.

We crate our dog, Rosco, when we're not home. So for those who do the same, how big a crate/kennel do you use for your corgi?

When Philip was a puppy I had a 26" plastic crate for him, but he grew out of it as he got older, so we've upgraded to a 30" wire crate, and it's been working great.

I don't have all that much space, so I went for something that's just big enough for him to be comfortable in. If you have the room for it, I would recommend going a size higher (32-36) to give full comfort to the dog.

Also, Philip chewed his plastic crate when he had it, so wire has been working much better for him. Those often come with a special divider, so you could buy a crate that is big enough for an adult Corgi, but make it smaller by putting the divider in while the puppy is growing.

When Edgar was still using potty pads he had a crate that was 2 x 2 x3 and it had an end door and a side
door. Black wireframe with an insert for the bottom. He was never crated in just the crate...I used caribiners
to attach a 4 ft wide and about 6 ft long metal fence like they use in shows and for the first year and a half
he was a very happy camper in that. As he graduated to the doggie door he no longer uses it. When we got
Madison for the first two weeks she used the same arrangement...but she is a very quick study and picked
up on the doggie door immediately by following Edgar in and back out...now they use it as part of their race
course. They only go into the crate if we have too many doggie visitor or someone spills food in there (Dad).
Lubya is right the black wire stuff is best...but they have to like being in there...source of lots of treats and
water readily available. Unless they want to be there I never crate either of them in the crate alone...but
I have tile floors so the extra pen thingy work for us.

I don't have much room either - condo - but I bought a pen. That way, I could adjust the size as he grew and it could fit water, pad and bed when I had to be gone for a few hours. It was open and bright and he didn't seem so confined. It really came in handy when he had surgery and had to be confined for two months.

When Willow was a puppy we used a small one to help with potty training. I bought a nice play pen type enclosure for her, but she learned how to escape from that. I tried a plastic crate, she hated that, so I tried a medium wire kennel. She likes this one a lot! She even sleeps in it at night with the door open. My other Corgi has a light weight portable kennel she sleeps in, but I don't think Willow would stay in that very long. Willow has learned how to unzip things! Corgi's are so smart!!!biggrin

Thanks guys, this helps me with the type and size it should be. We use a crate like Lyuba mentioned for Rosco. We like that one! Thanks again.

Max has a Petmate Vari Kennel Ultra (bought at Petco). I think it is a medium size. He can sit, stand and turnaround inside the crate. He will even sleep on his back in the crate. This is his home.

We also bought a wire crate when we were evacuted during the wildfires in 2007. We now use this to transport him in the car.

Trevor had/has the same size Vari Kennel, but it only got used when we first got him, during the potty training period. He now sleeps on his cushion beside the bed (or ON the bed, if he can get away with it! )

One thing about those wire kennels - they are great as far as air flow, but most folks agree that they should NOT be used to transport your dog in the car. In the event of an accident, it is very likely that the wire cages will collapse and the now exposed/broken wires may well impale the animal. Not trying to scare you but it could happen. Much better to used the hard-sdied Vari Kennel in the car.

Yogi sleeps on the bed (most of the bed with the cats - king size) with stairs for access. In the car, he as a real dog car seat with a harness attached to the seat belt so he doesn't become a projectile in case of an accident. Since he goes to work with me every day, I looked at safety and comfort, due to his age. Yeah, people stare, but he's the dude. We have no pride.

The crate I got for Theo is 36" deep, I think. It's the largest one I could fit in my car. Hehe. I wanted to make sure he had room to stretch out into his superman pose if he wanted to. of course, he usually just curls up in the very back, but I think it ended up being a good size for him.
